Lenny Larson recognized the needs of victims of a mysterious new disease when most were too frightened to approach AIDS patients. In 1980, HIV was misunderstood and feared, and the government turned a blind-eye. Lenny and his friends, Alex and Joe, began buying food and delivered meals to homebound AIDS patients.
In 1983, their compassion and vision grew into the “Chicken Soup Brigade” (CSB, now Lifelong Aids Alliance). In 1987, Lenny began a fund raising project he called “Jars In Bars” (JIB). He decorated and put jars in Capital Hill Bars, where customers could donate spare change to feed AIDS patients. JIB expanded into grocery, liquor, and pet stores. In his retirement, Lenny and his dog, Petal, spent 30 hours a week walking to all of those locations, collecting the jars, rolling the coins and depositing the proceeds. By 2005, when Lenny received a Jefferson Award for his 20 years of volunteer service, “Jars In Bars” had raised almost $500,000.00. Lenny retired from JIB, but continued to volunteer on Beacon Hill with Friends of Lewis Park, and arts organizations. Lenny and many others stood together supporting their brothers and sisters with direct action giving comfort and aid to those without hope.
Christina Olson, a lifelong Beacon Hill Resident, passed away in 2024. She was an exemplary neighbor, the only child of Italian & Swedish immigrants, she learned about the diversity of our community at Mercer Middle School and embraced democracy and multiculturalism. After a career with Washington Dept of Transportation, Christina was a dedicated volunteer advocating for food sustainability and an educated electorate. She was an original Beacon Food Forest Steering Committee member and spent many hours doing outreach at community events sharing free seeds in hand made envelopes to engage neighbors in supporting the volunteer movement that created the 7 acre BFF where any one can pick the abundant fruit, nuts and vegetables grown collaboratively by volunteers. Later she was an original member of Beacon Hill Garden Club and helped tend the Pear Trees at Garden House and facilitate Pear-a-dise events to bring neighbors together to share in the bounty of the pear orchard there.
She also was a lifelong learner and shared this passion with our community by curating Beacon Hill Meaningful Movies, monthly for 5 years until COVID shut it down. She produced a free documentary series on social justice and environmental issues , followed by discussion and information from local activists in the area of the films. She served 7 years on the Beacon Arts Board while shepherding those programs under our umbrella. She is the end of her family line and is deeply missed by the many friends she accumulated over a long productive life.

This Little Light of Mine Honors the passing of:
Bernice Johnson Reagon 1942- 2024 & Elijah Lewis 1999 - 2023
Bernice Johson Reagon at 16 was the founder of the Freedom Singers. She sang with this group in Washington DC at the end of Dr Martin Luther King’s March on Washington in 1963. Ms Reagon continued leading singing at marches and events throughout the Civil Rights Movement. Later she founded Sweet Honey in the Rock and took on opposing apartheid. After thirty years she retired from her role as director of Sweet Honey in the Rock and retired.
Elijah Lewis also started organizing for his community as a young man. In high school he organized to fight gun violence. He went on to work with Africa Own as a community builder and started Flourish Financial Group to teach financial literacy. In bitter irony, Mr Lewis was shot to death in 2023, victim of a road rage incident. He was only 23 years old and is deeply missed and mourned by family and friends.
Ofrendas are displayed at El Centro de la Raza starting November 2nd, and then from November 4th to the 18th. 11am to 8pm Monday - Friday / 12pm to 6pm Saturday.
